What advice do you offer new teachers about relying on colleagues when it comes to classroom management techniques?
Management has to do with organization. When you manage a store or team, you organize the store or team. You don’t discipline the employees, customers or players.
You often point out that teachers don’t discipline students; they manage classrooms. How should teachers manage students in differentiated classrooms?
Students do not learn when they are disciplined. They learn when the classroom is organized for learning and success. Differentiation refers to instruction, not to management. A store is managed to run well. The differentiation comes in the variety of merchandise that is offered.
We line up daily on our "lines" in the gym in the morning. My class knows where to stand how how to wait for morning announcements. They know the expectations I have for the gym.
My other classes, while they don't have announcements, they still come into the gym and know to stand on the lines and wait for instructions.
I have them line up at the back of the gym when it is time to go into the classroom then once we get to the front doors to enter the building I have them line up in a "quiet and straight line" and then I tell them the plan for art class and exactly what tools and materials they need to bring into class.
For art, as they enter the room they are expected to have the materials previously mentioned out and ready to go and wait for instructions.
For water or bathroom they are asked to go one at a time and to ask before they go.
When it is time to leave, my class knows to leave the tables clean and clear and to gather their things and wait for me in the hallway.
I have "claps" and phrases in place so they know quickly that I need their attention or that I am giving a reminder that they need to correct a behavior.
My students know I expect them to clean up the gym, field, and classroom when class is over. They know it is their responsibly to care for the items they use everyday.
My students know to ask my permission for certain things in the classroom, they know not to get on the computers unless instructed, they know not to have cell phones out at all, they also know where to turn things in and the activities I have planned for them if they finish early.
