A school-based professional learning community (PLC) is well structured to enhance all aspects of project-based learning.
Assignments that are bigger than a lesson and smaller than a unit are a good way to experiment with inquiry-based learning.
Students take responsibility for their learning and develop solutions for complex problems when their research paper becomes a PBL unit.
Project-based learning (PBL) naturally lends itself to differentiated instruction. By design, it is student-centered, student-driven, and gives space for teachers to meet the needs of students in a variety of ways. PBL can allow for effective differentiation in assessment as well as daily management and instruction. Here are some specific differentiation strategies to use during a PBL project.
(2022-2023)
Ms. McDaniel and I teamed up and together we created one of my most favorite PBL Presentations for our shared 9th class. The students looked at and studied the French Revolution and the major historical figures who made an impact on history. One of the deliverables from her class were a "recipie" for the French Revolution. In my room, after learning about the art period during the time of the French Revolution (Rococo, think gold and GAUDY) we created a place setting that represented a historical firgure assigned to their group. The table setting presentation was inspired by conteporary artist, Judy Chicago's Dinner Party. It was really fun to tie in such a random assortment of artistic influences, history lessons, and aesthetics to create such a cohesive gallery showing and PBL presentation. I am SO amazed by the 9th graders and how hard they worked to create such an interesting presentation. This has been one of my FAVORITE PBLs to date.
(2021-2022) 8th and 9th grade came together and created a really unique show we titled "Utopia vs Dystopia. Joy Clary and I teamed up and together we created a really fun PBL that looked at Utopian worlds and dystopian worlds. In her class they read books and wrote, in mine they created 3 pieces of art, each exploring utopian and dystopian ideas.
(2020-2021) This is a current and on going project but I wanted to make sure I included it. I will continue to update this section as I make progress. Kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd grade, 3rd grade, and 4th grade are all working together to put on an art show at the University of Texas at Tyler. Each class will create a collaborative piece inspired by a famous artist in history. The artists we have looked at so far are Yayoi Kusama, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Wassily Kandinsky, Andy Warhol, and Louise Nevelson. Each class had learned the in-depth history of each artist, then each class was assigned a specific artist to reference for their collaborative piece. Each class was so excited for their assigned artist!

(2020-2021) Our Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grades participated in our Grinch PBL. Physical Education and Art teamed up for a month long PBL and explored "How to make the Grinches heart grow." We explored using the Know and Need to Know method and incorporated art, dance, physical education, math, chemistry, social and emotional skills, and English/writing to answer our driving question. The scholars took home multiple deliverables home such as ornaments, paintings, letters, and bath salts. At the end of the PBL the scholars presented their findings to their teachers and administration staff. They performed a dance, showed art work, and explained the meaning behind each item and how it answered the driving question. Each teacher and staff walked away with a printed and bound book of the stories used in the PBL to take back to the classroom.
(2019-2020) When all scholars were sent home due to COVID-19. The 4/5 team created a PBL for the scholars that could be done remotely. We decided to create a virtual art museum with images made for their pets! All four classes, Science, Art, Math, and ESL pulled together to create an incredible work of art! Please take time to tour the gallery for the full effect!

(2019-2020) Our Pop PBL for 4th and 5th grade was cut short due to COVID-19. We were looking at three artists, Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, and Roy Lichtenstein. They were all major players in the Pop Art movement. We studied what they were looking with their art, this incorporated a lot of history and economics. We were creating different styles of art using Pop Art, this included sculpture, collaborative works, installations and 2D paintings and drawings. One of our installations was the hallway outside of the classroom, we created a Keith Haring mural, with dancing figures drawn and cut out by scholars, we had a Andy Warhol soup can sculpture, and then we involved the whole school by offering for them to join and color images provided so they could be apart of the Pop Art installation in the hall way! We did not get to have our final presentation due to being sent to remote learning because of COVID. But we still learned a lot about a very influential moment in time.
(2018-2019) 4th and 5th grade participated in my first solo PBL! We looked at the artist Vincent Van Gogh. We studied his artist style, his life, and his intentions with his paintings. The scholars then got to present their work by hanging their portraits in the art gallery at UT Tyler. On opening night we hosted parents and guests and had a gallery talk by students who were selected by their writing assignment over the artist. It was a wonderful evening and the scholars walked away understanding the artist and his impact on the art world.
(2018-2019) Together, the 11th grade class created an entertaining evening in the form of a flag football game. Together the class created the rules, made the teams, built the plays, and facilitated the event.

(2018-2019) The 4th and 5th grade team together created and executed the Expo PBL. In math they worked on the finance side of making, selling, and profiting. In English they worked on persuasive writing and how it applies to sales. In art they created signage and products to sell at a large expo the whole school was invited to. Afterwards the scholars were able to figure out their profit. Every scholar walked away with a profit and a sense of accomplishment.

(2018-2019) Art helped with another 4th and 5th grade PBL. Art class was design time for the Game Board PBL. The students had specific requirements in their Math, Science, and English class, and in art we put them all together in an aesthetically pleasing way! We then invited family members to the school and played our board games!

(2019-2020) Art class aided 4th and 5th grade English class and their recreation of the "Rats of Nihm" map from the book. We studied the passages and had certain criteria to stay within for the map. The maps turned out beautiful and worked wonderful for their presentation!
