I TEACH ACCORDING TO THREE KEY COMPONENTS IN MY CLASSROOM:
My very first year teaching I was introduced to Rita Pierson. She helped shape me, and is still shaping me, into the teacher I am today. I learned from her that a student won't learn from someone they don't like. That really stuck with me. To me, this means I must first gain my student's trust before I can teach them something. My students know that I care about them and their well being. I make it a point to tell my kids daily that I love them. Another thing I pay attention to with my students is Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. A student cannot and will not learn if their basic needs are not met. From this I take away that before I can get my students to focus on the activity for the day, I must first know how my students are doing physically, emotionally, and spiritually. I do this by talking with my kids, greeting them each as they come in to my classroom, and spending the time at the beginning of the year to learn each child's baseline so I can tell by body language, or other signs, that their needs have been met. Then and only then are they ready to begin learning. If their needs are not met, I do what what I can to help meet those needs. I do this by either providing food for a hungry student, a quiet space for tired student, or a hug and a listening ear for a hurting student. Doing this helps build that trust and relationship with my kids that lets them know that I truly care about them. The third thing that I really try to pay attention to with my students is what their currency is. In other words, students all have something that is important to them, I get to know them and figure out what that thing is, and with that, I motivate them. This way I can can continue to build that relationship with that student and help them reach their personal goals. This reinforces the fact that I love them and want whats best for them. I love knowing my kids' interest. It helps me know how to motivate them, encourage them, and help them be successful.

These three components are not all the things I do to build rapport and classroom culture. But these three things are the building blocks of my classroom. I want my class to be safe place for my students. A place for them to rest, relax, learn, create, be them selves and EXPLORE!
